Saving Mr. Splashy Pants

"Not out of altruism, but just interest in doing something cool."

Alternate title: Why You Will Never Find Leamur on Facebook

So this is entertaining to point at and chuckle, and the consequences were positive for the whales apparently, but what are the consequences for our minds when we let shared enthusiasm supplant altruism, rather than support it? Does anyone disagree with Ohanian that this "meme" succeeded because of people's desire to participate in coolness, rather than to help whales? Or with my concern that "coolness" is whatever's catching, and is not necessarily (or only coincidentally) what's good?
